Although 7 x 19 wire rope is commonly called aircraft cable, it's not intended for aircraft use. The construction includes 7 strands with 19 wires per strand in galvanized steel, creating a small diameter cable that's flexible and resistant to corrosion. This type of general purpose galvanized aircraft cable is found in a range of industries in applications such as winch lines, garage door cables, fences, railings, sailboat rigging, and exercise equipment.
A galvanized finish is excellent at providing resistance to corrosion on 7x19 cable, but does not offer the same level of protection a stainless steel wire rope will offer. However, galvanized aircraft cable does provide slightly more strength than stainless steel. For additional protection, this configuration is also available in a vinyl coated wire rope option.
